[Philmont]: Itinerary Cross Reference - 1999 thru 2002

I have completed adding the detail for 2002 to my itinerary cross reference
charts at http://www.troop116.org/phlitinxref.htm. You can now link from
the summary chart to the itinerary detail pages and see the 2002 treks
included. (Don't forget to hit Refresh" or "Reload" if you've visited these
pages recently.) This information might be helpful to those who are
familiar with treks from previous years and want to see what changed for
2002.

This info was taken from the Philmont Treks Itinerary Guide books (hopefully
without introducing errors). To the many of you who have already responded
to me with mileage questions, I do not have answers as to why so many of the
mileages increased in 2002 when little or no other changes occured. But I
believe it is simply because adjustments and recalculations were made to
improve the accuracy. For example, itinerary # 30 hasn't changed in years,
but the mileage in 1999 was given as 83, in 2000 and 2001 was 69, and in
2002 is 80. There may be some new trails to account for some variation, but
veterans who have taken this trek in the past (as I have in 1996 and 2000,
and will again in 2002) tend to think the explanation is probably because of
using improved techniques to calculate mileage in 2000 followed by
refinements or error corrections applied in 2002. We know, for instance,
that when all the mileages were refigured in 2000, some of the Baldy side
hikes, or other segments, seemed to have been left out of the overall total.
If you are interested in a particular itinerary and are really concerned
about the exact mileage, do your own map study and research. When it comes
right down to it, I don't think the variations shown in total overall
mileage from one year to the next are all that important. By the time you
do side hikes and other options you might have, the mileage given should
only be regarded as a base estimate and as a comparison with other treks.

Anyway, hope the itinerary cross reference charts are helpful and of
interest.
