How good are your knees?
Can you hop from rock to rock going down hill with your pack? If so, you do
not need them. If you worry that your knees will give too much when tired,
or you occasionally stiffen up doing this type of "lunge" work, they will
pay dividends.
Some think they help going up, but I think that is an illusion. They
dramatically increase my downhill confidence and ability. I can almost keep
up with the boys using them:-)
