I went to Philmont in 2000 and the treking poles never left my hands when I
was hiking, according to the literature I'd read it takes a 1/3 of the
weight off your knees, and I know it helped, but crossing rocks, streams and
especially going down Black Mountain they more then paid off. I decided to
try them because I met a 70 year old who could out hike me, I was 48, and
said he had knee problems! I does take some time to get used to them and
what I found out is that the grip mattered more then the price. I now have
a pair of expensive Leki's that are spring loaded, found them on a sale that
was too good a deal, but the ones I took to Philmont were inexpensive,
however the grips were a rubber compound that my hands could grip to when
they sweated or it rained. I've tried some that had a hard plastic handle
and they weren't much use because my hands had a tendency to slip.

How necessary are Trekking poles at Philmont? I am 43 years old, and in
reasonably good physical condition. I heard somewhere that trekking poles
are recommended for the mountains at Philmont, but I am wondering if this
is something I will really use, or will they end up just being carried in
the backpack most of the time.

Thanks in advance,
Terry Newkirk
