My Crew and I have been training for Philmont now for a few months. We have
verntured into some very steep trails where going up hill, trekking poles
are very helpful for taking some weight off as you step up. What is more
important is the balance provided for going down steep, skree covered
trails, that can be very slippery and treacherous for a backpacker. While
all of the crew do not have trek poles, it seems, when ever we hit these
steep grades those without poles request someone else's to stabilize there
weight and keep themselves from shifting their weight too far forward. A
costly mistake on a steep downhill slope. I would hike without them.

Best of Luck,
Paul Yates
