Looking at Julian Love's Web site (thanks for a great resource, Julian) I
was interested to see that Itinerary 12 is now rated at 64 miles, up from
the 56 miles it was listed at last year. We did 12 last summer and I never
could get my mileage estimates to match up with the official ones. I haven't
seen the 2002 Treks book but I suspect the biggest corrections are probably
for the longer route from Black Mountain to Lambert's Mine, the side hike
from Lambert's to Cypher's Mine for program, and/or the side hike from Cito
to Ute Gulch for food pickup. Moving the last trail night from Ponderosa
Park to Shaeffer's Pass is also a good thing, in my opinion. The hike over
Tooth Ridge on the last day was far and away our worst day on the trail, and
cutting it a bit shorter would have made it that much more tolerable.
