Trekking poles are a personal choice. I used trekking poles for the 1st time
on our trip to Philmont in 2002. I would never go without them. I found the
poles were especially helpful when traveling uphill. Downhill trails become
a lot easier to navigate with 4 legs instead of 2.
 
Poles were also used for setting up the groups dining fly and eliminated the
need to pack a separate set of dinning fly poles for that purpose. But if
you don't feel comfortable or natural using them you won't then the poles
just become useless weight. I would advise borrowing a set for your practice
hikes and see how they fit.....
