I love taking burros. We had a great time with ours (Wassabi the Red Hot
Burro) last time. They take at least an hour more to get started in the
morning and carry almost nothing. If you sore them up by poor rigging, you
may end up carrying their gear.
Once we realized that they are pets, not beasts of burden, we had a great
time.
Most treks have very little to do if you do not take the burro. We took 21
and it had only a few miles to go each of the first couple of days. Taking
the burro filled up the time.
The burro was second only to the Tooth of Time and Baldy in my boy's fond
memories, but it is a matter of attitude. The wrong attitude and the burro
experience will be memorable in a different way:-)

You do not have to take the burros. The Scouts hardly ever want to once
they
find out the burros will not carry the Scouts' equipment.
I always say it is a good experience for the Scouts to take the burros,
though...it teaches them what it is like for us to deal with Scouts.
