We're also from southern California, and we've been to the Training Center
twice. The year we went by car we took I-40 across northern Arizona and New
Mexico and spent the first night in Flagstaff, which is almost exactly half
way. There are plenty of the usual chain motels there, good restaurants and
lots of sightseeing. We stayed a few days and made a side trip to the Grand
Canyon and another to Sedona. There's a lot more we could have done if we'd
had time.
The second night we stayed at a motel in Santa Fe, then drove up through
Taos and over the mountains into Philmont. I don't remember the name of the
motel but once again there are plenty to choose from. We didn't spend a lot
of time in Santa Fe but I believe there are a number of tourist attractions
there.
My son has done the Boy Scout program twice, at 11 and again at 13. The
first time he was in the "first-year scouts" program, which is probably what
the FY stands for, since your son is 11. As I recall, the program wasn't all
that different for the older and younger groups. I wouldn't worry too much
about which group your son is put in -- he'll gave a good time either way.
The program included sports, handicrafts, a tour of the Villa Philmonte and
perhaps the Rayado Museum, and the overnight. Probably some other things I'm
not remembering. Don't expect any advancement work. My son took his backpack
the first time, expecting that the overnight would be a backpack trip, but
while the boys did hike, their gear went on a truck. They spent the night at
the Stockade and hiked to the Tooth of Time (I don't remember whether the
Tooth was both times, or just the second).
We went back last summer and did a Trek and will be returning in 2003.
My daughter, who was 16 the first time we went to PTC and did a Mountain
Trek, has worked on staff the last two years and is going back this summer.
Have a great trip.
