We were on Trek 21 last summer as well. The prior posts have pretty well summarized
the downside of burros (late starts, slow, ornery, etc.) and that taking the
burros eliminates the opportunity to go over Wilson Mesa.
IF I had a vote, I'd have opted to not take the burros and to go over Wilson
Mesa. But I didn't, and the boys wanted to take the burros. Actually, burro,
since there are many more crews going from Ponil to Miranda than the other way,
and there are not enough burros to give the crews more. (Crews from Miranda
get two or three). One burro carries 50 lbs of crew gear, which is not a lot
in the scheme of things - if you think it will significantly lighten your load
the days with burros, you will be disappointed.
Having said all that, the boys were really taken with the burro ("Pachmo", don't
ask me why, cause I don't know) and it was one of their highlights of the trek.
