If you haven't already seen them, stop by Meteor Crater and the
Petrified Forest on the way in. If you can spend some extra time on the
way out, Mesa Verde in Southwest Colorado and the Grand Canyon are
always worth a look. As far as unit level stuff goes, talk to your DE
and hint strongly that you would be interested. They try to make a
guess as far who might want to go and what they would they might need.
Since it is National training, they hope that the experience/training
received will be shared beyond the unit - at a District level (District
Committee or Roundtable). They group the boys by age and physical size
- horseback riding, hiking, scoutcraft, handicraft stuff will be the
usual. The overnight typically involves hiking rather than backpacking
(they transport the boys backpacks up to the Stockade for them, but they
have to hike in. They can shuffle the boys assigned program based on
skill level - by age, my youngest is scheduled for Tigers but he'll have
graduated to his Wolf den by then.
