Re: [Philmont]: cameras

In different trips, I have taken 35mm SLR's with 3 lenses, point and shoot
35's, a waterproof Canon 35, and a digital camera on the last two. I have
even taken a VHSC video camera on the trail. I take the camera that I want
without regard to the weight. For some people, this will be their only time
there, so you want it recorded on film. It depends on the type of photos
you want. If you really get into bugs, wildlife and flowers, then I would
say a better SLR is in order. If you just want to have a photo album to pass
around after the trip, then a point and shoot will suffice. I have used a
digital camera twice now and will not use anything else. I average 300
pictures on a trip to the ranch as I like to document the entire trip. With
the digital, you can get a little crazy and take pictures with reckless
abandon. I took 498 pictures in 2001. You can weed out duplicates and bad
shots without wasting film, and save just the good ones. I put the final
shots on a CD for every member of the crew and they loved it. You can print
out the ones you like. The type of digital camera is personal preference
with a large number of different types on the market. I used a Kodak D260
shot at 1164X768 and the pictures were great. I now have a Canon A20 with
waterproof housing that I will use on my next trip in September. I hope this
helps.
