For all who are considering a conference/ family trip
to Philmont Training Center in 2002:
An interesting side note about PTC arose in my home
two nights ago. I popped my head into the room where
my daughter was using the computer simply to issue a
generic Hi, Poppa's home greeting.
She was just a chatting away, and being the curious
sort, I asked who she was hooked up with. It turned
out to be a conversation with three members of her Los
Jovenes group (Da LJ's) from a trip we made to PTC in
August 2000.
These youth had never met before spending a week
together at PTC in 2000. Residing in various parts of
the country, to my knowledge none has actually laid
eyes on another since that time. Yet, via the
internet, there they were, four teenagers still
enjoying the memories and each other's company and
still keeping current on what is happening in their
respective lives, continuing a friendship first forged
19 months ago during a week at PTC.
There's no question in my mind that PTC offers some of
the most dynamic training you'll ever be exposed to as
a Scouter.
However, even if the training was merely par for the
course, the beauty of the area, the fellowship you'll
enjoy with others, and moments like my daughter
enjoyed the other night 19 months after PTC 'ended',
say to me that a family trip to PTC would still be
worth very serious consideration.
Kevin Pate
who believes that although a PTC conference may end
after a week, the memories and benefit of being there
is like da Energizer bunny ... they just keep going
and going and going and going ....
