I dunno about the sandal thing. I have always backpacked with sandals as
camp shoes, and didn't not know about the new rule last year until I got
their. My ranger told me that that it was ok to have the sandals on the
trail since I had no tennis shoes. I was told I couldn't cook. I am still
very upset about that rule, as I wear sandals 24/7 365 for about 8 years now
(or pretty much, even in snow!). I broke that rule with two other crew
members. Yes, shame on me!
I think the sandal thing should be addressed with the crew in pre-hikes, and
that it should be up to the member and advisors. Next time I go back, I am
going to bring sandals. There is a major point between "protection" and
"comfort" and sandals are one of those that I will take comfort over and
will just have to live with and consequences from them.
And yes, most programs (climbing, riding, branding, etc.) you NEED closed
toed shoes, tennis shoes prefered, but boots will work for most if needed.
And closed toed shoes are needed for cooking, but then again, if all you are
doing is opening the packages and sumping, and not near the stove.....?
Thats my view/experiece with sandals.
