Philmont is and will be special to each participant in their own way. I
would like to share two success stories. Our Troop had two crews on the
trail in 2001. One young man from another troop was with us. His father is a
good friend of mine and wanted his son to go with me. The son had pretty
much decided that he was done with scouting after he "had" to go to
Philmont. I watched a quiet young man bloom into a chattering and well liked
member of our crew. His father emailed me the other say saying that his son
just passed his Eagle Board of Review. The other young man was from our
troop and his father was the advisor for our other crew. It was pretty much
the same circumstances as the first young man. He should be finishing his
Eagle within the next month or so. Philmont did something to these young
men. Who or what we don't know, but I will bet both will be back some day. I
remember the same feeling as a 14 year old in 1967. The point is: Score two
for the Philmont experience.
