Brent Steiner asks...
do you have a choice of that day you do the service? or should you just plan
to hike real early to ensure you have the time to do program? and
the itinerary looks like the night is spent at clarks fork but actually at
upper clarks fork? do you side hike back to clarks for the chuckwagon
dinner or just finish the hike to upper clarks fork after dinner?
Comments...
If there is more than one project location on your itinerary, you then have
the choice. While I was not on Trek 24 last summer, another crew from our
contingent (which happened to be from my troop, I was with another troop and
on Trek 21 which parallels 24 to a great extent) was. Head of Dean was the
only real opportunity for a scheduled conservation project. They ended up
doing an unscheduled project at Rich Cabins because they realized Day 7 was
going to be very busy otherwise with hiking, program, and conservation
project.
Every day the crew needs to decide how early to start in order to get in
whatever that day's activities are. Some days need to be very early.
In 2001, the last night was at Upper Clark's Fork, but in 2002 it is moved
back to Clark's Fork. Frankly, this makes your long last day even longer.
In 2001, crews setup camp at Upper Clark's Fork and then went back down for
program, chuckwagon dinner, and campfire. Crews on other routes scheduled
for Ponderosa Park do the same thing. Getting a VERY EARLY start from Upper
Clark's Fork or Ponderosa Park in order to see the sunrise from Schaefer's
Peak is not uncommon. That is what my troop's crew did, and it turned out
to be the only unimpressive sunrise I've ever experienced at Philmont -
dense clouds on the horizon meant that eventually the sun rose above them,
not the horizon.
And by the way, Don Nugent called Upper Dean Cow a dry trail camp and
relatively small - there are a number of sites strung out along the trail,
and there is a well. He may have only seen the sites when you immediately
reach the camp - the well is closer to the far end of the strung out sites.
