Not sure about the legal issues involved with a diabetic scout, but I can
speak from personal experience. I was diagnosed as a type I diabetic
(requiring insulin injections) at age 16. I was scheduled for a Philmont
trek 3 months following my diagnosis. I had a successful trek with no
problems (also, I had no parents along). I have since then done one
additional trek, NJLIC, NJLIC staff, and worked on Philmont staff.
Additionally, I served two years on a council camp staff. There is no
reason for diabetes to be a factor in holding a boy back from the program.
It's all about the scout's willingness to take care of themselves and
understand what special requirements they have. It's also important for
leader's to be familiar with the disease and emergency procedures.
My scouting experiences with diabetes helped me to overcome the mental
barriers associated with a chronic disease. I would not recommend
witholding that experience from anyone. If you have any additional
questions please let me know.
