The last couple of years, I have been thinking about creating a high
adventure program. Not to compete with the BSA, but to take those Scouts,
Venturers and Explorers who want to experience the next step and provide
them with the opportunity. Mountain climbing, first 14,000 peaks and then
Mexico (18000) Peru (19000) and Argentina, (20,000). Whitewater rafting,
every class and single day to multi day trips. US, Canada, Mexico,
Argentina. Skiing, back country, avalanche work etc. Canyoneering. Kayaking
Rock Climbing. Leading, multi day pitches, high altitude pitches, etc.
Backpacking: US, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Chile
I think, to do this, you have to find a way to make your program distinct
from the many competing high adventure programs that do similar things. The
Sierra Club has a very strong program of this nature. However, their
problem is cost. I am taking my scouts to Switzerland in 2004 to visit
Kandersteg. Their ticket is $1500 each for 10 days. The Sierra Club offers
a Swiss outing that stays in hostels and does virtually the same activities
for $3150 each.
I suppose if you can make your program have some sort of tie in to scouting
such that you can take advantage of scout facilities, that would help the
cost factor. But I'm afraid you're either going to be just another
organization that offers such outings, or you're going to be an "extended"
venturing that offers what venturing already offers, but for a larger age
range.
Regards
Don
