Pholks,
Here are some notes from Keith Galloway's presentation at the
East Coast Philmont Staff Association Reunion this weekend.
When asked about modifications to treks this year because of
the fire, he said the only major impact to 2003 treks will be that
Dan Beard won't be used this year (cause it burned down). He
said TREKS books should be going out any day now.
The chuch wagon dinner sites at Clark's Fork & Beaubien have
been improved to bring them in compliance with New Mexico
sanitation regulations.
The trading post has been enlarged and improved this year.
Vale Vidal treks have not been available before monsoon season
recently due to fire restrictions. But this year, since the fire danger
is low (because of the fires last year) Vale treks will be available
starting earlier in the season.
A state-of-the-art water system has been installed to service base
camp.
A $1.8M restoration is underway for the Villa Philmonte. This is
being done with private funds.
There were 20,908 backcountry campers in 2002, a new record.!
