The Magellan 315 is a newer unit with the latest receiver technology and does
receive all 12 satellites.
Not only on top of Mt Phillips, but out on the flatlands also can you peg out
all 12 satellites, but altitude gets you up so you can "see" the horizon
easier.
<<GPS does take into account altitude.>>
Very true, however keep in mind that GPS is very accurate in two dimensions,
like to 15 feet horizontally. However vertically, it is not very accurate
with altitude, being said to be only accurate to 100 feet. In my experience,
that is more like 200 feet. This small change is significant in the
calculation of distance over a trail that goes up and down as do the
PhilTrails.
