"To accommodate this, I bought a leather case for it with a spring clip and sewed a band on my shoulder strap of my day pack just below my shoulder. I then tether it with the strap to "catch" a fall which is inevitable.
When backpacking, I use an external frame pack and have sewed a strap on the dies of it up high so the antenna sticks up for maximum effective reception."
That reminds me, I did end up with a good system where I could keep mine in the soft case with the antenna pointing up, but then ran my chest strap thru the case strap. It was always right at my chest level and what not at all uncomfortable.
And yes you can set intervals where the unit will mark spots. This is the bread crumb trail I refer to. I believe mine gives you a choice of time or distance. I chose time and I think I set it at 2.5 minutes. Then at the end of the day, you could ask it to connect the dots and it would (or should) take into account elevation changes. I would generally add about 5-10% for a fudge factor. Actually, if you had a unit with incredible memory, or a place to unload data, you could set the unit to every 5 or 10 seconds and get real accurate info.
John, in most cases, my elevation readings were within 10-15 feet of what Philmont had posted. My son carried a watch that reads elevation and his readings were far less accurate.
