While I've never camped at either of those places, I would recommend the
Ponil Campground. At the Cimarron Inn, you're basically right next to
the motel rooms (it's probably better suited for RVers), while the Ponil
Campground is an actual camprgound with grassy and shaded sites
available. It would be a much nicer place to camp. One of the owners
of Ponil, Butch (not sure if he's still around or not - it's been a
couple of years) is the former mayor of Cimarron and used to drive one
of the Philmont buses (maybe he still does, again, I'm not sure). A
great guy, very Scout-friendly, plus he knows a lot about the history of
the area.
