We have spent the night in the meadow at Philmont on two seperate treks (1997 & 2000). For something like $4 they'll let you camp in the meadow between inbound and outbound tent cities. For a very reasonable charge they have meal tickets for the dining hall as well.

Traveling from the west coast (CA) our airline flights usually find us arriving around 4pm to the ranch and settling in for the night in the meadow. Makes for a great first night experience as the scouts get time at the trading post and snack bar. Gives them time to relax as we're already at the rach. A good night's sleep and a shower, breakfast, then we pick up our ranger.
