[Philmont]: Eagle Light Boxes

Hello All. Since the List is doubtless about to get real busy real
soon, I figured I'd better provide the promised update pronto.

I have had about 3 dozen responses to my queries on Eagle Light Boxes,
both from the Philmont List Server and also through the District
e-Newsletter I write (which also goes out to several thousand people).

Bottom line is, to everyone's knowledge, there are no light box "kits"
available from the BSA or through any commercial or private source. All
light boxes that are out there apparently were hand-made (some well, and
some not so well). Several people have provided me with detailed
directions on how to make light boxes, and I will put their instructions
together and post them on a hidden page on my Troop's website at some
future date, pending the following future "discoveries":

First, about a half-dozen people recall there having been a detailed set
of instructions for building a light box, that was published many years
ago either in Boys Life or Scouting Magazine (maybe both). However, no
one seems to have a copy of this, and my efforts to find same have been
unsuccessful. However, I am still looking. If I find it, I'll convert
it into a .pdf file and post in on the aforementioned webpage.

Second, I am going to approach several commercial light box companies
and see what a run of let's say 100 of these light boxes might cost per
Unit. In these hard economic times perhaps someone will see a business
opportunity - and keep the price reasonable. If anyone knows anyone
else who is in this sort of business, please let me know OFF-LINE. Thanks.

Of note, several people also asked if a smaller, more portable model
could be made that would run off a 12-volt car battery. This would be
for Eagle ceremonies held outdoors far from any 110 source. I will ask
on this as well.

If the prices for commercially made boxes are not ridiculous, I will
make a survey to see how many people would want one or more of them. It
does seem that there is a significant need for them, at least based on
all the queries I received. We will see.

Thanks to everyone who responded. Sorry the news isn't more favorable.
