While I don't always Agree with John, and have in fact disagreed with him
strongly on occaision, I think he put it well. "GPS is a useful tool"
I would also add that it's not one that anyone should rely on (which I think
he also mentioned) nor one inexperienced backpackers should use. Also,
this "useful tool" is not one that should be used to the exclusion of all
others.
Anyone carrying a GPS, should always consider that they are carrying dead
weight. It only becomes useful at the end of the day when enalyzing the
days adventures, or when you get home and record the waypoints. (which have
already been recorded by others. Check selden's site.)
That said, I'm planning on carrying my GPS during my 2004 trek. I'm also
not planning on using it for any navigation. Does that make me a fool in
your eyes? Maybe, but I'm not seeking approval. I'm guesstimating that
the GPS, spare batteries, and a solar charger will be about 2 lbs. And if
I carry 2 lbs for 50+ miles, and it doesn't work at all, then I carried
the extra weight, and I'll let you know and you can say "I told you so",
and you'll be right. But I don't suspect that will happen.
