I have used a variety of services to scan my negs and slides and you can
see the results at http://wemc.net

When I shoot slides I get a "KODAK PHOTO CD" made. It is very important
that you specify "PHOTO CD". Otherwise you may end up w/ the lower res
"picture cd" and "picture cd"
images are not suitable for making re-prints of any size. I quit
shooting slide film and having it run to "PHOTO CD" however because the
local lab that can do this was scratching my film every time. I wish I
could find a mail out place that does "Photo CD" affordably. This option
is a bit pricey - figure about 15-20 per roll (C41 or E6) w/o prints.

Next if DALE LABS in Hollywood FLA. I found DALE LABS when I became
frustrated with the lab above. DALE offers what they call a "DALE
PICTURE CD" for $9.95 a roll. It is the same resolution as the Kodak
PHOTO CD but each roll is on a separate CD w/ a contact sheet and they
can only burn C41 (print film) to CD. I have made prints as large as
20X30 from files created by Dale labs. Dale also offers Kodak Photo CD
service but I have not tried them for that. This is my preferd lab at
the moment. They have incredible dust control and the customer service
is the best I have ever had. You can find them at http://www.dalelabs.com

Last is the tried and true Wall-Mart. WM can produce a CD that is lower
res then the Dale CD but still fine for prints up to 8X10 (11X14 with
some degradation) for only $5.00 per roll. You get a CD for each roll
w/ a contact sheet. They also can only do print film. I typically use
WM for scans that are not as critical as Philmont or N. Tier. It's a
good cheap alternative.

If anyone knows of a good lab that can affordably scan slide film or
medium format film please let me know. I would love to go back to E6 w/
my MF camera but it's just not cost effective for a hobbyist.

After I get the scans this is my work-flow:
I organize all the images in folders on the PC
I toss out obviously bad images (misfires etc)
I manually adjust the levels, contrast, color in Photoshop (I've tried
to batch these actions but did not like the results so I do each image
individualy. Time consuming but worth it)
I upload them to my photo server for everyone else to see and order
prints from
then
I make another CD of just the prints that I want. I take that CD to WM
and they have a Fuji Kiosk that will read the CD and let me order prints
(3x5, 4x5, 5x7 8x10) from the images on the CD. Be sure to use the Fuji
kiosk as it will produce prints on the labs main Fuji Frontier printer
just like the rest of the lab work. If you use the Kodak kiosk you will
get every expensive inkjet (dyesub?) prints from the Kodak printer.

If anyone likes I also make CD coppices of all the retouched images for
them.

A word about dotphot (photo sharing website). If you went to my site at
http://wemc.net you would have been directed to my account on dotphoto.
Dotphoto is great because they give you free unlimited disk space and
users can order prints from the site. They get back in the mail true
silver-halide prints on real photo paper. Quality is occasionally not
up to par w/ other services like ofoto or snapfish, but dotphoto will
stand behind their prints and reprint anything that is not 100% acceptable.

Hope this helps.
