Coop, Wally, and I have had a friendly (but longstanding) disagreement
on ideal pot sizes for full sized Crews at Philmont. Here is the
solution I came up with during my 1992 trek:

Note that we have *never* lost a meal using this technique, and that's
over about 20 High Adventure treks - 200 meals??? Also of interest,
this arrangement will boil 8 quarts of water a minute or two faster than
8 quarts divided into two 4-Quart pots on separate stoves (yes, I've
measured it under identical conditions). It is also about 4 - 5 minutes
faster than 6 quarts in a 6 quart pot on a single stove, again under
identical conditions.
The S.O.P. on this technique is to boil 8 quarts of water, then divide
into separate pots as needed for the various meal items, keeping the
excess as the start of the cleanup hot water. If the meal items need
additional heating (not needed too often), the stoves are divided for
use - but in such cases, a Scout always holds the pot to prevent spillage.
Anyway, something to consider before running out to buy new pots.
BTW, the old BSA "backpacking" cookkit had pots that were just over 6
quarts. There are still plenty of these rattling around in Scout
closets all across the USA, and they are once-in-a-while spotted at yard
sales too. Plus they're nice and light.
