GSP is a tool. It isn't a substitute for a map and compass. If one does
not understand how to navigate with a map and compass, one probably won't
have a clue how (why, where, when...) to use a GPS. A tool can be pretty
useless and even dangerous if you don't know how to use it.
The BSA already incorporates teaching GPS skills in its program. GPS skills
have been a requirement for the Land Navigation component of Venturing's
Ranger Award since its inception. The 2003 requirements for the Backpacking
Merit Badge also include GPS skills as an option.
