What is a yum-yum bag? I also see a lot of chat about filtering fuel. Does
Philmont really have that bad of supply of fuel? Any recommendations of a
second pair of shoes to pack? So many questions, so little time!

Yum-yum bag is the waterproof plastic bag one of your crew carries (or the
crew shares) on the trail. It contains left over, uneaten food, all food
packaging, and other discarded smellables. Your crew carries it on the trail, fills
it/adds to it after each meal, and discards contents at designated staffed
camps along your trek. Leave-No-Trace and backcountry protocols require you
carry out anything (food particles) that won't fit through the screen (a piece of
window screen) that covers the opening to the sump in each camp where you'll
dispose of your gray/wash water. Paper and plastic packaging can be a
considerable volume. A "fun" project the crew may tackle is to see who can compress
the greatest volume into the smallest container (box/bag) after each meal.

The fuel filtering thread has pretty well run its course, in my opinion.
Generally, Philmont's liquid fuel purchased on the trail is fine. As a matter of
prudent trailcraft, you should filter your fuel going into the fuel bottles
and again when filling stoves from the bottles. Felt-type filters are
preferred. Paper, coffee filters won't do the job as they're designed to pass water.
Paper filters will take care of particulates.

Hope that helps. Others may weigh in.
