Don is correct. Over my past 4 or 5 treks, I have seen a number of
Crews camping in the no-man's land between trailbound and home-bound
Crews. All were using their own tents. And yes (as I said), you can
always buy additional meals as needed. But if you do not have your own
tents, and Basecamp is full, and you have made no prior arrangements
with the Staff, you are painting yourself into a corner. Sleeping on
the picnic benches under the Welcome Center pavillion would not be my
idea of a fun first night at Philmont!
The point of my first post remains - if you decide that arrival a day
early is a prudent precaution WRT Amtrak, make sure you make first night
arrangements with Philmont (or elsewhere) - don't just assume that the
Ranch will be easily able to handle you. Basecamp is chaotic enough
already without "surprises". And several such "surprises" all on the
same night could really create a mess for people who will have already
put in a long day.
