I've taken 4 contingents to Philmont over the years, flying into ABQ, and
the best way to handle packs as check in baggage is to put them in duffels.
You can spend a little or you can spend a lot, but the point is to have
something substantial to protect your pack from handling damage in transit.
Outfitting stores carry duffels made for this purpose, WalMart and others
carry standard zip duffels that can handle a loaded pack, no problem. Check
at army surplus stores, they have duffels that fit this purpose as well.
I've used all of them. Get what works within your budget and protects your
gear. It's a lot better and more functional than a trash bag and duct tape.
