I have used these stoves for over a year when backpacking with a group
without any problem. We purchased 3 per crew for 3 crews our 2003
Philmont trip. Used them on 3 shakedowns and the trek without any
problems. The only thing I noticed that some of the crew initially did
not push the canister in tight enough and twist hard enough to seat it
properly. They quickly learned how to do it.

Subject: Re: [Philmont]: PowerMax Basecamp Stove Problems
I have used (read as: attempted to use) the single burner extreme stove,
had the same problem.
Coleman swapped it out for me, no charge, but I had the same problem
again. The top of the bottle seems to be the culprit, it strips very
easily, sometimes you can get it to stay just right, but I've quit using
these stoves except in the backyard as a demo for cartridge stoves.
I was attracted to the stove initially because of the large control
knob, easy for kids, even with mittens when cold weather camping.
Maybe it could just be my ineptness, don't know my own strength, etc.
(Pick which ever excuse sounds good!)

Hi:
My sons and I bought a new Coleman Powermax basecamp stove.
It's the two burner model, exponent xpedition. The stove is very stable
due to the bigger footprint and the two burners are great when you're
cooking for several people. We bought the stove on sale from Campmor
for $39.97.
When we tried to test the stove at home, we couldn't get the
Powermax fuel cartridge to lock. The instructions say to "attach fuel
cartridge to fuel valve by pushing in and turning clockwise until it
locks (1/8/ turn)." The cartridge rotates and tightens up, but then
pops loose. Fuel flows to the burners for a couple of seconds and then
stops.
The stove apparently was packaged for the Japanese market and
the instructions mention that it was designed for the Powermax "J"
cartridges. We're using the standard Powermax cartridges from Bass-Pro
(they have the same part # but don't have the J at the end of the part
number) and we tried to attach two separate cartridges. Both had
identical attachment problems.
The customer service folks at Coleman were very polite but said
they were unfamiliar with the Powermax "J" cartridge. Coleman said to
send the entire stove in and they'd be glad to swap it out.
Any suggestions? We'll probably send it in for a replacement.
One lesson learned here is to test all your gear and techniques at home
before heading out on the trail. Eating uncooked rice would have added
a bit too much roughage to my diet.
Thanks much
