Re: [Philmont]: Seeking advice on Trek Itineraries

Jeffrey,

I haven't done any of the "newer" super strenuous treks available, but I did
old #24 (only "new"#30 comes close) in 1984. The miles haven't gotten any
shorter in the last 20 years...

Super-strenuous treks provide little time for program for most crews, simply
because the crews either not willing or disciplined enough to get up EARLY
(ready to hike with the rising sun), get the hiking done, and still have the
time or energy to do most programs.

In 1984, we got up early (usually 4am), got our hiking done with time to
spare, and still didn't have the energy for most programs (we did shoot
black powder and rock climb). Take into consideration the crew was made up
of 6 Philmont vet Eagle Scouts and 2 Philmont vet adult advisors, all of
whom wanted to do nothing but hike the camp....

For Philmont first-timers, I would suggest a shorter trek and focus more on
the programs. First timers remember the programs more than the
hikes/scenery. For Philmont vets, do the miles, see the camp, take
advantage of another opportunity to spend 11 days in God's country.
