I wish I had read your post before placing my order with Alps. I have
not tried compression stuff sacks.

I picked up some of these bags at a Samsonite outlet store and
have used them. My experience is that they work for a while,
then they won't quite seal. In one trip, I had two bags fail.
They also don't get things as small as a compression stuff sack.
I've not yet had a compression stuff sack fail.
They may be okay as a cheap alternative that is used for a
limited time, but if you have a need for frequent squishing, I'd
spend the money for a decent compression sack. Also, there is
a difference in how they pack. The plastic bags are square, and if
that fits well (it does in luggage, not so much in an internal frame
backpack), then it's not too bad. The compression stuff sack doesn't
work well with luggage. And the compression stuff sack wrinkles
things more. The plastic bags, as you say, are more waterproof.

Via Alps Mountaineering scoutdirect.com on pro purchase, you can
get their 20 inch tall compression stuff sack for $9.60. This is
what I use. I can get all my clothes for a week long back pack
into this sack and compress down to smaller than a football. It fits
very well inside my pot, so it packs great on backpacks.

For me, it's the compression stuff sack on the trail, the plastic
bags on luggage trips.
