As noted by another poster to this list, we had great difficulty finding a
van even though the major rental agencies advertised their availability. When
you factor in the gear you may be carrying, you have to plan where you're going
to put it. Adding a U-Haul trailer and hitch to the package can complicate
your summer! Van rental folks may not allow it. Also, roof racks are pretty
much out of the question from what we could determine. Van rental, including
insurance and 11 days in the Philmont parking lot led us to choose another
alternative. There were 11 of us in our crew.
Like another poster to his list, we chose to charter a school bus from Durham
Transporation Services and left the driving to them. They picked us up in
Denver, took us to our motel in C Springs where we rented an 8-passenger van and
a car for our group of 11 to do sightseeing for a day (Sunday). Then Durham
picked us up at our motel early the morning we were due at Philmont and drove
us to Cimarron. We left Colorado Springs about 6:30 AM I recall and were at
check-in by 10:30 AM. The bus returned to Colorado Springs (Woodland Park).
They returned to pick us up the day we departed the ranch and actually arrived
an hour earlier than we expected them. Their driver took us directly to the
Denver airport ... about a 6 hour trip with stop for lunch. Traffic on I-25
between Pueblo and Denver can be slow due to construction. Also, Raton Pass
always seems to be under construction at the Colorado/New Mexico line. Speed
limit on the road from Raton to Cimarron was governed by construction in the
summer of 2003 also. Don't assume you can drive 75 mph all the way! Remember to
allow a bit extra to tip the driver.
