Interesting to see a discussion of low boots vs. high boots.
For me, it's between low boots and trail runners. Being a
semi-ultralight kinda guy, I have to look at those trail
runners pretty closely. You don't get on any really hairy
trails at Philmont (in fact, for use Sierra Nevada kinda guys,
the trails at PHilmont are downright civilized - more like
hiking the Grand Canyon than the Sierras). So, do you
wear four pounds worth of boots one one point five pounds
worth of trail runners? The ultralight folks claim the
weight on your feet should be doubled to give the equivalent
in your pack. Don't know if I agree, but I gotta say, those
lighter shoes have an appeal. The biggest problem is that
they are not usually as water resistent as boots.
