The Polar Pure is dry when purchased, with the iodine crystals (BB looking pellets like Steve said) in the bottom of the jar. There will be NO water in the bottle when purchased. If the seal was not on securely, some of the iodine may have sublimated out of the bottle, but the amount lost would be nil. I have yet to see anyone individually (or a small group for that matter) use up a whole bottle of Polar Pure. You will see bottles at Philmont where the iodine pellets are much smaller.

As soon as you are ready to use the Polar Pure, full the bottle to the top with water, let sit for at least an hour, then use to treat untreated water. You must wait one hour after putting Polar Pure in untreated water before drinking it.

I have always used 2 capfuls of Polar Pure per quart of water instead of using the "thermometer" on the side of the Polar Pure bottle. Philmont will tell you to use 2 capfuls per quart, also. I have never noticed the iodine taste from Polar Pure (when at Philmont as a Scout we used Potable Aqua tablets to purify - those things are NASTY tasting!).

Another ASM in our Troop uses AquaMira after filtering his water. That water tastes the same as Polar Pure'd water to me.

I've been hearing talk about using turkey bags for cooking. What is the method in which you use them. Are you pouring the dry food and then the hot water into it? or lining the pot with the bag(I am aware you can't have the bag contact direct flame). Also we have a scout master who just purchased a bottle of Polar Pure from Campmor to use on our conditioning hikes. He told me that when he opened the package, the bottle did not contain any liquid (water, I'm sure he meant) The foil seal was also not firmly attached. He's concerned the bottle may have leaked. I've never used the product, so was unable to answer his question. Does a new bottle come dry? He also mentioned the bottle has markings on it indicating how many capfuls to use, and that some of the marks are for 1.2 capfuls etc.. How critical is the fraction? One last question, has anybody used AquqMira and what's the feedback? Thanks for any input.
