A little hint to help keep your water filters clean and moving water. Bring along several hair bands for pony tails or stout rubber bands and a clean bandana. Fold the bandana down to 1/4 size and wrap it around the intake and secure in place with the rubber bands. Using the bandana as a prefilter helps cut down on the larger particles and signficantly reduces cleaning required. Also make sure your intake is not behind a rock and is suspended midway between the surface and the bottom in the "clear" water. Whenever possible look for pools with rocky bottoms and don't stir up the bottom when you are pumping.
After 3 treks to Philmont and 6 days in the backcountry of Yellowstone my son and I are still using the same filter with success.
