Mick, first I'd let the boys decide. In your planning meetings this should be talked about and get a group decision. In 2002 some of the boys were tired (adults more so) when it was our day to side hike Baldy. We could have climbed it and returned to Baldy Town but and there were some that thought that was the way to go. As we talked about it some wanted to go over th French Henry for the mine tour and pan for gold, eventually the boys decided to go do the activity also and they all thought it was great...but the adults didn't force the decision the boys agreed. The same thing happened at Clarks Fork with the horse back riding and they had a good time. But I know on some of our regular trips the boys absolutely enjoy the 'free' time, so again you can encourage but the boys really need to decide...remember the adults are on 'vacation'. I'd do it the same way again and look forward to the next trip.

Hi:
A question for all you experienced Philmont trekkers. Many of the treks have days with no planned activities. For example, trek 21 has a two day break in the middle of the week with no activities other than hiking. Do the guys enjoy these quiet days? And view them as a chance to just take it easy? Or do the guys want an activity every day?
Thanks much,
Mick Meyer
