RE: [Philmont]: Hydration packs or water bottles

That is a problem with hydration bladders. I've seen a scout run out of
water because of the convenience and not knowing how much is left. However,
if you don't have that problem (I don't), it's okay. The only way to know
if you would have the problem is if you use one. I use a hydration bladder
on the trail, water bottle on rests and off trail. That is what works for
me. If the bladder runs out, I know how much is left in my bottle(s).

A counter argument is that it is always difficult to get the kids to drink
enough on the trail at Philmont, and having something where they don't
realize they are drinking more than usual could be a good thing. With water
bottles, they may not drink enough because it is too much trouble to get the
bottle out while hiking.

Running out of water is not a bad thing when it means you drank more than
you would have had you not used a bladder.

I was told that the hydration packs would be bad because you cannt
keep track of the amount of water you have left. What do you think?
