This is something I was wondering about... what is the distribution of the
requests across the various itineraries?
Somewhere I read that the majority of crews request itineraries in the
typical category. That seems to imply that the typical treks have more
demand for them while the more difficult itineraries would have less demand.
Strenuous and super strenuous itineraries are recommended only for people
with prior Philmont experience, so that would also seem to reduce the number
of crews requesting more difficult treks.
So, if you are selecting a difficult trek, you might be able to send the
card in late via snail mail and still get your top choice. On the other
hand, experienced folks who are more likely to select a difficult trek,
probably have their selection ready to go when the packet arrives.

I would suspect that registering as sister crews would dramatically reduce
your chances of a top choice, since there would need to be two openings for
the requested trek at the time your card arrives, not just one.
Due to a number of reasons, we did not get the card mailed until Tuesday.
Our first choice was #31, which is super strenuous. We received
confirmation for 31 today.
It would be interesting (to me, anyway) to see some statistics on the
popularity of the various treks. It would also be interesting to know how
treks on a given start date fill as cards arrive over time. [Yes, I do live
a pretty boring life].
