We break our first aid up into two kits: injury/foot care and medication.
These kits are considered crew gear. Personal first aid kits only include
required prescription medications.
Foot care kit:
Moleskin (we require each crew member to provide one package of Moleskin
each - sounds like overkill, but we almost ran out in 2000 - the stuff just
doesn't stick as well as it used to)
Small roll duct tape (duct tape wrapped around a McDonalds straw about 1
1/2" diameter - use over the moleskin or Band Aids to aid in holding on)
20 1" flexible fabric Band-Aids (generics don't hold nearly as well)
1 small roll 1/4" wide waterproof tape
6 4"x4" sterile gauze pads
10 individually wrapped alcohol pads (look in diabetic supplies for these)
1 small tube Neosporin ointment
1 nail clipper
1 tweezers
Something to add if you can find it - Benzoin Tincture - after disinfecting
the blister/cut, apply a very small amount of benzoin around the wound. The
benzoin aids in helping keep the covering adhered to the wound area (old
pharmacist trick). Benzoin Tincture can be hard to find.
Medication kit (does not include personal prescription medications!):
#20 Tylenol (or generic acetaminophen) 500mg tablets
#100 Advil (or generic ibuprofen) 200mg tablets (2 or 3 tabs are great for
aching advisors)
1 roll Roll Aids
#12 Imodium (or generic loperamide) 2mg tablets
#20 Pepto Bismol tabs
Personal prescription medication note:
We require any crew member who uses ANY inhaler (mild, moderate, or severe
asthma) to bring TWO BRAND NEW inhalers with them. They are to carry one of
the inhalers at all times, and an adult advisor is to carry the other
inhaler at all times. There is nothing worse than a crew member running out
of medication hours away from base camp.
