For the theorists:
Our 713 crew received their 2nd choice trek (#32) which they're pretty
excited about...they were split between that and their first choice #24, and
the order was actually reversed up to a day before mailing in the card.
Reason why we didn't get our first choice? I'd say all of the
possibilities cited below...got our packet from Council after many others
reported receiving theirs (March 24, don't know when Council received them),
lost a day for final reconsideration of choices, we're on the East coast,
and I gather #24 is extremely popular. We used Express Mail but the timing
wasn't favorable - it arrived in Cimarron on Saturday 3/27 and had to wait
through the weekend. Received confirmation 3/29.
Bottom line - nothing but good news. Crew takes a five-day warm-up trek on
the AT during spring break next week - we're stoked!

Subject: [Philmont]: I didn't get my #1 and this is why
Philmont Pholks:
No, this is not a rant - I have not yet gotten a response to my trek
selection card and so I cannot say "I didn't get my #1 choice",
but someone on the list recently opined that all of us who *are* on this
list will probably do okay with their choices, better than others who may
not be aware of this list, who are not as diligent about returning their
card, etc.
Okay, let's test that theory.
As you receive your trek selection confirmation, if you did *not* get your
#1 choice, then please tell the list, and also say if you have an idea as to
why:
- My TREKS packet arrived after many others had already received theirs
(like Monday March 22 or later)
- I didn't return my card immediately
- I used ordinary US Postal Service mail versus some expedited delivery
service
- I'm a long way from Philmont (like Northeast US) and it takes 3 days for
mail to get back there
- We made some pretty popular choices (we got our #4 or #5)
- Anything else?
A lack of notes with this subject line will tend to prove the theory:
despite late packet arrival, etc, we did pretty well.
