Unless things have changed during the past few years, up to three crews
(if they are small) can start on the same trek on the same day.
Typically, there will be no more than two crews. Before the advent of
political correctness at Philmont, the crews were usually termed "sister"
crews. I'm not sure what they are called now. During the first two days,
the Rangers make sure the crews don't get in each others way, and stress
the importance of the crews hiking independently of each other. After
that, it is up to the youth crew leaders. Getting advisors involved is a
last resort. Typically, the situation takes care of itself as one crew
will be slower to get moving each morning than the other crew.
