On an unrelated topic altogether...

The link above may be familiar to many on here but I just found it
recently. Some awesome Philster has made a list with hyperlinks that
take you to the USGS Terra-server satellite photos for every Philmont
campsite. You can also navigate around once you are on the page,
shifting in any direction, zooming in or out, etc. Note that while the
picture is what will load initially, click on the toggle button in the
top right and it flips to a topo map of the exact same piece of terrain.
Unless one is adept at photo-recon analysis, and/or if you have not been
to the place depicted I do not think it will be all that cool. However,
if you have been there, you will be able to re-construct where your
campsite was, where the staff cabins were, which trail did you take,
etc. I can also think of situations on our trek where having an
overhead view of a couple of the places where we were unsure of our next
move might have been helpful.
It's kind of cool.

I don't know what most crews use to start their stoves, but I thought
this
may be of value:
Starting April 14, the Transportation Security Administration
(TSA) will begin enforcing a ban on cigarette lighters in
commercial airline passengers' carry-on luggage. (Lighters are
also prohibited in checked luggage.) This ban covers all types
of lighters, including butane and absorbed-fuel or Zippo-type --
matches, though, are not prohibited. TSA will dispose of any
lighters discovered at security checkpoints.

Subject: Tooth of Time -- a new poster
When my oldest son went to Philmont in 1984, Dawn Chandler was the
ranger
for his crew. Dawn went on to serve as the first Executive Director of
the Philmont Staff Association. Currently, she operates an art gallery
in
Taos.
Dawn has announced that she has produced a poster of the Tooth of Time.
http://www.taosdawn.com/toothoftimeposter.html
She anticipates that the posters will soon be available at the Tooth of
Time Traders at Philmont, the Cimarron Art Gallery and the St. James
Hotel
gift shop.
The posters are for sale at $19.95, with orders received before March 15
receiving free shipping and handling (a savings of $6).
Other than wanting to see success for an artist with a long time
connection to Philmont, I have no financial or other stake in Dawn's art
business.
