RE: [Philmont]: Camp Shoe - Crocs

in 2004 our ranger used these as his in-camp footwear, and swore by them.
Me, I'm old-fashioned and can't stand the feel of plastic in any form around
my feet, so I stick with Birkies at home, mid-high leather boots on the
trail, and some cheap leather mocs in camp...not waterproof, but light and
serviceable.

Subject: [Philmont]: Camp Shoe - Crocs

Does anyone have an opinion about Crocs for use at Philmont as a camp
shoe. These shoes have recently become extremely popular, and are
extremely comfortable, extremely light weight, and not expensive. They
come in various models - see:
http://www.crocs.com/footwear.asp

The Highland model has no holes, but does have the open heel with strap
like all of them do, but it may be hot on the foot with no airflow or
ventilation in the front. They're made of special patented closed cell
resin, kind of like plastic rubber.

A Scout in my council contingent was wearing a pair on a recent backpack
weekend trip - had the multiple holes in the front. I told him they would
be unsuitable at Philmont - not closed toe and not allowed for use while
cooking, as well as other activities. However, I still wonder about the
Highland no-holes model and am experimenting myself.

Does anyone have any experience camping with Crocs and an opinion on their
suitability for use as your only camp shoe at Philmont?
