Steven-I can brag on Tahosa, if you want. But I can tell you that when I
spoke to the ranger up there a couple of weeks ago, he said that almost all
the Alpine Adventures were reserved for this year, so the program is
definitely growing in popularity. Basically, it is a Philmont trip with a
ranger the WHOLE time and almost no program besides the backpacking/hiking
education and rock climbing. The Rocky Mountains are more "scenic" than
Philmont (in a rugged, mountainous way) with lots of above timberline stuff
and I believe most of the treks traverse the continental divide. It is
also about 1/2 price from Philmont ($250 for six days, I think).
The council website has some information (www.denverareacouncil.com) or
here is the direct url for the 2005 registration form:

I'm wonder if any of you fine folks on this list server have any first hand
knowledge/experince at any of the following High Adventure Bases'?
I am gather information at this point and in a week or so will let the the
scouts make some choices. At that point I plan to hand it over to them for
the final planning. (with some guidence of course)
In no particular order here they are:
Elkhorn
Packard
Tahosa Rocky Mountain
Del Webb
Teton
Tomahawk
We are 700 something on the Philmont list and are looking at these council
camps instead for 2006. We may still sign up with N.T. for a end of summer
2005 trip.
