Hi,
You might want to also consider:
Impeesa Extreme - Canada's first High Adventure Program - very similar to
Tahosa, from all accounts - more rugged that Philmont, backpacking in the
Canadian Rocky Mountains - www.chinook.scouts.ca/impeesa-x gets you to their
website (though the contact email on said website is incorrect right now -
you'll want to email Bob Dyer - bdyer@scouts.ca for more info). For those
of you long timers on this list, I'm not directly associated with Impeesa
any more, as I took a transfer within Scouts Canada to Vancouver Island last
fall, but I will still vouch for a great program. They always have lots of
spots available - High Adventure bases are a new idea to Canadian Scouting.
Northern Tier - www.ntier.org - canoeing rather than backpacking, but still
definitely high adventure! I worked there for a couple of summers when I
was in university and we always got a kick out of people who had been to
Philmont telling us after their trip that they'd had as good of a time with
us. They also often have spots available at a late date.
Hope that gives you a couple of ideas you might not have considered.
Cheers and Good Scouting!
Mike

I'm wonder if any of you fine folks on this list server have any first hand
knowledge/experince at any of the following High Adventure Bases'?
I am gather information at this point and in a week or so will let the the
scouts make some choices. At that point I plan to hand it over to them for
the final planning. (with some guidence of course)
In no particular order here they are:
Elkhorn
Packard
Tahosa Rocky Mountain
Del Webb
Teton
Tomahawk
We are 700 something on the Philmont list and are looking at these council
camps instead for 2006. We may still sign up with N.T. for a end of summer
2005 trip.
