RE: [Philmont]: Amtrak regs

I’ve seen a few Scouts and Scouters who would be prohibited after their
trips by:

-Corrosive or dangerous chemicals or materials, such as liquid bleach, tear
gas, mace, radioactive and _harmful bacteriological materials_.

And;

-Animals (except service animals)

Just my $0.0175 (2 cents Canadian)

Mike

I don't think cellphones and laptops are prohibited from Amtrak...  Think
about it.  When I travel using Amtrak on business, I carry both.  When I can
get a business class seat (in a Business Coach), there is an OUTLET to plug
the stuff in...  Bringing a laptop to Philmont is a different story...

I am actually surprised about number 7 because during my travels to Philmont
numerous people have laptops as carry on baggage. I personaly brought a
laptop and opened it up in front of the train attendent. Regarding the
weapons: I think a knife would constitute a weapon and the train attendent
actually saw a knife one of the scouts was carrying. No problems in either
case. I believe that they are only strict in the obvious situations but just
stick the rest of the items into the list of prohibited items just for legal
reasons.

Note: Amtrak does not have any security in making you walk through metal
detectors or scanning your bags. So while it is definitely not scoutlike if
they say not to bring lighters (which do contain flammable fluids), it would
concievably be possible to take them on the train without them noticing. If
you call up amtrak ahead of time and ask for permission to bring the
lighters with one adult carrying them for the troop they probably would not
have a problem with that.

Interesting list, I guess for those crews coming to Philmont via Amtrak the
debate about cell phones, GPS units, digital cam-corders etc. is pretty much
settled by #7 though.  And the last items pretty much takes care of adults
who don't meet the weight requirements.

Sorry, I'm just in a fiesty mood today.
