Good evening.
We had a "popular" trek in 2003, Trek #24. The trek included Baldy, Tooth of
Time on the last day, guns, and animals.
I was freaked out waiting for the 2003 Itinerary Guide. I kept getting
messages on this list where people were saying they got their trek
assignment from Philmont, and I had not even received my Guide. Still, we
got Trek #24, which was our first choice.
During the winter, we surveyed all crew members, Scouts and adults. We asked
each to list the seven most important activities that he wanted to
participate in, ranking them 1 through 7. Using these survey results, I
reduced the number of treks from 35 to 10. These 10 treks had the most
activities that the crew members wanted to do. I then gave these 10 treks to
the Scouts, and they picked our first 5 choices and prioritized them.
At this point, we were working from the previous year's itineraries. And,
the previous year was the year of the Ponil Fire Complex, so we knew there
would be some changes.
When the Guide came, I reviewed the Scouts' 5 choices based on the 2002
treks with the actual 2003 treaks - no material changes. I then filed out
the card, the same day, and mailed it from the post office the fastest way
possible to Philmont, which is not overnight mail.
It worked for us.
