Indian Writings has not been mentioned on this list yet. I think IW and
French Henry are the spookiest places at Philmont. Having worked at IW for
four summers I have seen many a backcountry staff and ranger get spooked.
At Indian Writings we never told ghost stories to crews but did occasionally
let them out during Advisers coffee.
Most of the time all we had to do to scare anyone who showed up at IW was to
point out the burials in the canyon, much less the pithouse. One year we
even
had Father Ron come up and calm the staff.
Having said that ,the only staged event I know about was a backcountry staff
investigating the possibility of launching weather balloons with blue light
sticks inside during Ranger Training. The cost proved to be prohibitive as I
recall.
